Hello. I've been working recently on a Metroid game for the 89/92+/v200:

Let me know what you think. Also, if you would like a beta version to play, email me at bcherry@gmail.com. And feel free to reply in French, I am able to translate. If you would like me to post a translated version as well, I can do that. Sorry I haven't been around in a while. Oh, and Jf, congrats on Program of the Year (I voted for you!) And your mario looks very cool.

I do need some help now though. Maybe one of you smart people (like Kevin) can explain this to me. I currently have all of the data (maps, enemies, sprites, etc) in the one file, but it is too big for the 64 kb limit. (For example, I can't have both maps above loaded at the same time, it would be too big). I need to put everything into a compressed data file (using ttpack?) I've never done this before, and want to be able to load a single map into malloced memory at a time as I run the program.

Try looking at the documentation of ttarchive, I think it does what you want.

What you can also do, of course, is to manage the offsets of the entries yourself. Basically, you compress each map individually, and you throw them all together into the file, but you remember the offset each entry had when throwing them together. All this is best done on a computer. On the calculator, you then get the file pointer, read the offset from a table, add it to the file pointer and pass the result to ttunpack_decompress, or whatever decompression routine you want to use.

Ok, I'll take a look. I've now got it mostly working using uncompressed data, but I would love to do it with compressed data. Thanks Kevin.

Sorry I only reply now, but I was kind of busy.
I never really played a metroid game, so I can't compare your screenshots to anything.

I haven't tried your game yet, but I think you should make more background graphics, it's too monotone (does this word mean something in english?).
Other than that, the collision detection looks perfect, and the ennemies movement are pretty good too.

I seems that you are horizontaly scrolling 8 pixels at a time right ? I guess it would be a real pain or even maybe impossible) to change, but a 4 pixel scrolling would be better.

My last advice is, focus on the gameplay. If you create a awsome gameplay, you can forget about putting some killers graphics.

Ill try the game soon. Good luck; this is one hell of a step above ddr and jet blaster :)

Yes, backgrounds are a consideration for me, I think I will have parralax backgrounds in the end. At least plenty of variety and inanimate objects in the tile maps. The scrolling is not any set amount, it matches to your position, so if you run really fast, it will scroll really fast. And gameplay is by far my main concern, and is being developed quite thoroughly. Thanks for the comments, especially from a 2004 Program of the Year author!

Oh, and DDR was never finished, I only had a very preliminary beta i made in a day or two because I was bored. That said, I do plan on finishing it... someday. And hey, Jet Blaster 2 was pretty good!

WOW! Look nice so far! I see you implemented the scrolling animation when you enter hatches. Pretty cool! I would have one suggestion so far: I think it would be cool if the background was dark (parralax scrolling isnt necessary very much), like in the old metroids. I guess there might be some work needed on sprites if you do that but I think it would look ever more cooler! %) Here is what I got in my BASIC metroid-like game for the TI-83+ (which has black background):

I would like sooo much to play your game once it's finished, but unfortunately I only have a TI-83+ SE and if I buy a new calc my parents will kill me #elec#
